Phoenix Raceway Remains Elusive To Jeff Gordon, One Of Only Three Tracks He Hasn't Won At
Phoenix, AZ (AHN) - Jeff Gordon doesn't have a win at three places in his Nextel Cup career and one of those venue happens to be the next stop for the Nextel Cup Series: Phoenix.
Despite that fact, Jeff Gordon, who drives the No.24 Dupont Chevrolet Impala SS, doesn't mind going to the desert for some racing.
"I really enjoy the challenge of this track, and we generally seem to run well here," Jeff Gordon said. "There were a couple of times I thought we had a shot at the victory but pit strategy or something else ruined those chances."
However, Jeff Gordon has been no slacker this season. So far, Jeff Gordon has five top fives and six top tens in the first seven races. Only Jeff Burton, who sits second in points, has been able to match that mark.
Jeff Gordon is not too shabby at the Phoenix International Raceway either. Despite no wins in Nextel Cup events, he does have one victory in the Busch Series there. Plus, of the 16 Nextel Cup starts that Jeff Gordon has in the Arizona desert, 13 of them resulted in top ten finishes.
Fans should all keep in mind however, that this week is the third Car of Tomorrow race this year for the series. In the two previous races, Jeff Gordon has finished third and second with the COT.
"I think this race will give us a better idea of where we are with the Car of Tomorrow. It's a lot faster track where aerodynamics are much more of a factor," Jeff Gordon said.
If it's any indication, Martinsville is the flattest short track that NASCAR will deal with all year long and Jeff Gordon has been able to come up with good finishes at Phoenix, the flattest mile-track the series will see all year. Jeff Gordon still hasn't translated it into a victory, which is a little bit of a surprise.
With the way Jeff Gordon has run though in 2007, his chance of going back to victory lane is coming shortly and Phoenix would be an ideal place for that to happen.
