NASCAR's Gordon will hit the dirt for first time since early '90s
The four-time Nextel Cup champion and current points leader will join other Cup stars Wednesday at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio.
The unique all-star race will also feature Eldora owner Tony Stewart, Kevin Harvick, Mark Martin, Denny Hamlin and Juan Pablo Montoya. They will race 2,300-pound late-model stock cars designed for dirt.
"I can't remember the last time I was on dirt," Jeff Gordon said. "It would have been in the early '90s when I was still racing midgets and sprint cars, before I went full time into the Cup series."
The HBO pay-per-view event will be broadcast live nationwide, with proceeds going to the Victory Junction Gang Camp and the Tony Stewart Foundation.
Tracy back
Paul Tracy got behind the wheel of his No. 3 Champ Car last week for the first time since fracturing a vertebra in his lower back in a crash at Long Beach, Calif., in April.
The 2003 series champion took part in a two-day test at Circuit Mont-Tremblant in St. Jovite, Quebec, where the Champ Car series will race for the first time July 1.
"It was great to finally be back in the car," Tracy said. "The test really didn't go as well as we hoped. We just couldn't get the car to handle the way we wanted.
"But at least I'm back now, and we can start focusing on the races again."
